Pirastro has introduced several new interesting strings during the music fair in Frankfurt , Germany 2005. With this newsletter we give an overview of these new string introductions.

The new Wondertone Solo E string is made from a new material that improves significantly the playability and the sound of E strings. The Wondertone Solo E has an outstanding sound volume and impressive power.

Very often there is a metallic edge in other plain steel E strings’ sound. In contrary, the Wondertone Solo E has a wonderful warm sound when playing pianissimo and an impressive brilliance in the higher registers. The string has a very fast response over the whole dynamic range.

Due to the outstanding properties of the new material this string is not affected by hand perspiration.

The Wondertone Solo E can be played with all other strings available. In comparison to gold-plated E strings the Wondertone Solo has an easy response and a warmer sound. In contrast to usual steel E strings the Wondertone Solo E has richer overtones.

Available in gauge 0.26 mm and 0.267 mm.

Obligato for Violin: Now also available for fractional sized instruments

Now this superb set of synthetic core strings is also available for fractional sized instruments in the following sizes: ¾ + ½ and ¼ + ⅛. Same as the full size set these strings have a warm and complex sound and they are powerful with a normal tension. The playability is outstanding.

Same as for the Obligato fractional sizes, the construction of the fractional sized Evah Pirazzi strings is based on the 4/4 string set. The fractional sized Evah Pirazzi strings have a slightly higher tension than the fractional sized Obligato strings and hence the bow resistance is increased. Their sound is more brilliant and powerful with a focused and complex tone. The playability is outstanding.

Résumé of Evah Pirazzi and Obligato fractional sized violins:

The new core material of the fractional sizes Obligato strings, Evah Pirazzi and Violino strings consists of a new synthetic material that we have co-developed with our supplier and which we obtain exclusively. The advantage of this new core material over nylon, carbon and steel is that it offers a wider range of sounds and is insensitive to changes of temperature and humidity.

With these two sets for fractional sized instruments young musicians are now able to play on the same strings as their famous role models: violinists such as Joshua Bell, Julia Fischer, Vadim Repin and Maxim Vengerov. We hope that not only the fractional sized Evah Pirazzi and Obligato strings will support the play of young musicians, but will also help them to enjoy their playing.

During the music fair in Frankfurt 2004 we have introduced the complete set Evah Pirazzi for cello – a steel core set. This year the complete set Evah Pirazzi Soloist has followed.

The sound of the Soloist set is rich, complex, colourful and textured. The diameter of these strings is smaller than those of the normal gauge. This makes fast changes of position especially easy and the response is fast. This in combination with the pliable feel under the finger, the big volume and the subtle acoustic feedback under the ear gives the musicians all the security needed to fully concentrate on their playing.

From the feedback of musicians two popular combinations of Evah Pirazzi strings have evolved: either a full set of Soloists or A&D mittel gauge and G&C Soloist gauge.

With the introduction of the Evah Pirazzi ¾ + ½ fractional size for cello we offer students a string set of top qualilty, which follows the same construction pattern as the already successful full size Evah Pirazzi set for orchestral and solo musicians.

Evah Pirazzi Viola A: An Alternative for Violists

This A string has the same new synthetic core as the D, G and C strings of the set. The A string is wound with aluminum. The sound is rich with overtones and colourful. The tension is reduced and the response fast. This string is meant as an alternative for violists looking for a warmer sounding A string than the steel core strings, but which is still powerful.

More and more musicians contact us and inquire about the difference of our new synthetic core strings. We have taken up their questions and suggestions and designed a flyer which outlines the differences in sound, tension and design of the Evah Pirazzi, Obligato and Violino strings. Furthermore, we have included information about alternative E strings and our rosin.

Recommendations for the usage of Evah Pirazzi, Obligato and Violino Strings for Violin

These three violin string lines all belong to the same string family having the same new synthetic core material. The position of the bridge is as important for these strings as it is for steel core or other synthetic core strings.

After changing strings, the bridge might be slightly displaced or shifted toward the scroll so that the new string set might not sound as good as it could. Some accessory companies offer a “string lifter”. This device helps the musician to lift all off the strings up in order to move the bridge back into its correct position. If you do not have such a device you can also slightly tune down all four strings and then move the bridge towards tailpiece until the position of the bridge is perpendicular to the top and tune the strings back to pitch again. If this procedure does not rectify the sound, please contact your luthier.
